Dodge Coronet 1966

For Sale

1966 Dodge Coronet 2dr Hardtop in the 440 trim level. It was built with the following major options:ย

  • 426 Hemi engine
  • 4 speed manual Transmission
  • Dana 60 Rear Axle
  • Power Steering

The VIN Matches the Production Broadcast Sheet,  which Matches the Body Trim Tag,  which Matches the SO Number stamped on the radiator core support,  which Matches the SO Number stamped on the trunk lower frame, behind the rear bumper.

This 1966 Dodge Coronet might have historical value.ย  The SO number production date is Jan 13, 1966. My research, (may not be valid) shows,ย the Lynch Road, MI plant started production of the STREET GEN2 HEMI cars Coronet and Charger in January 1966.ย This Dodge Hemi car did not get the frame torque box reinforcement plates. The car now has Mopar Performance frame connectors on it part number P4286869 installed in 1999.

The trim tag shows this early production car was special ordered. It must have been ordered by the little old lady from Pasadena. The paint code on the trim tag is 661 which is MAUVE. I could not repaint this mighty Hemi beast back to that color. ย I painted it to the correct shade dark green metallic GG1 for the 1966 Dodge Coronet. I kept the engine and under hood look to be as built in 1966.

The Car

I purchased this Dodge Coronet 440 several years ago because its was a well kept survivor with a log book from past owners going back to 1988. ย One owner stored it for 24 years.

The car has recently gone through a cosmetic restoration with its original bright work reinstalled.

The car had no rust issues and has its original quarters and floors. The car was factory undercoated and is in excellent shape, still dry and hard and doing its job.

The interior bench and rear seat covers are new Legendary brand, black with gray inserts as original to 1966 Dodge Coronet 440 Trim. The door panels are original to the car.

The dash is in excellent shape, no restoration was needed. All gauges and lights work perfectly except for the dash clock. SW mechanical tachometer added. The original steering wheel has no cracks.

The whole car was completley rewired with new OEM type wiring including the main under dash wiring.

The spare tire and bumper jack are there, the spare tire looks new but has age cracks.

The front suspension components are all original to the car and did not need replacement.

The power steering box is a new Borgeson type.

The brakes are the original manual HD Drum 3×11 front 2×11 rear which work very well.

All brake lines, fuel lines and fuel tank are new.

Wheels are Mopar steel 15×7 front 15×8 rear. Rear tires are J60 M&H DOT street type.

The Engine and Under Hood

The log book shows the engine was rebuilt for the first time in 1988, then refreshed in 2000 with performance parts.ย  When I removed the engine, this is what I found.

The block is a 1966 casting. The block pad is lightly stamped BH 426 HPย  12-14-01. On the oil pan rail is stamped 8-10-66.ย  This block is not the production line block. The log book shows this is a warranty block, something about bad main caps. Someone stamped the block pad to reflect the original block.ย  The crank and rods are stock Hemi. The block cylinder bore is 4.28, and fitted with 10.25 JE pistons.ย  The rotating assembly was balanced with a Fluidampr.ย  I left it on the engine. I have the stock harmonic dampner and it will go with the car. Oil pan is a Moroso 7 qt type.

The cam was an old 1990 Comp Cams hydraulic roller with too much lift and duration for me.  I replaced it with a modern Comp Cams hydraulic roller street Thumpr 24-600-11.

The Heads are 1998 Mopar Performance cast Aluminum.ย  I fitted new Manley valves in them. The water pump housing and pump are Mopar cast Aluminum. The rocker arms are Norris stainless steel roller tip. ย The intake and carburetors are original to the car. The carter AFB carbs are number 4139s front 4140s rear both dated K5. Both carbs have been rejetted for the car. The primary carb has been converted to a manual fast idle choke.

The ignition distributor is a Mopar cast iron tach drive with a magnetic pickup firing an FBO ignition box with a revlimiter.ย  I wanted to get rid of the ballast resitor.

The engine is fitted with TTI coated Headers and a full TTI 3 inch exhaust. Sounds Great.

The clutch bellhousing is a Lakewood cast Aluminum type. The flywheel is a Mcleod steel with an old school performance Weber Borg&Beck 11 inch pressure plate and disc.

The Mopar A-833 4 spd trans is a 18 spline input big bearing type. The case is stamped with a 1969 date.

The Inland shifter box is gone. It now has a Hurst competition plus box with a separate manual reverse lock out.  The original shifter handle was grafted to the Hurst box. I wanted to keep the stock shifter look.

The Dana 60 rear axle is original to the car, and has a new set of 3:54 gears. It had 4:56 – not good for the street.ย  The axle bearings were converted to the Green type bearing.

Body and Engine Restoration

The Featherlight aluminum trailer is available to the buyer (shown below).

The car runs and drives excellent.  I hate to give it up, but Iโ€™m pursuing another interest.

If you are a serious buyer you need to see this car in person, and bring your Mopar expert with you.

The car is located in western Montana, 40 miles south of Missoula in Stevensville, Montana, 59870.
